This half-day Symposium will address the restrictions on health claims under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The speakers will cover a range of issues about innovative foods and food claims, and food marketing concerns with the Code, the Competition and Consumer Act and other relevant laws that impact on branding foods with innovative claims.

Dean Stockwell - Food Standards Australia New Zealand - General Manager
Mr Dean Stockwell as FSANZ General Manager is responsible for risk management in developing the food standards for Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Geoffrey Annison - Australian Food and Grocery Council - Acting CEO
Dr Geoffrey Annison has been with the AFGC since 2007 and is currently its acting CEO. He has wide experience in food regulation and food technologies and innovation, having held a number of senior technical and management roles in industry in Australia and overseas, in academia, and in public policy
Peter Day - Head of Investigation and Enforcement Division, NSWFoodAuthority
Mr Peter Day is in charge of food law enforcement operations for all of New South Wales. The New South Wales Food Authority (NSWFA) is the best known as Australia’s food enforcement agencies covering Australia’s most populous state. The NSWFA is Australia’s first completely integrated “through-chain” food regulation agency. His brief includes enforcement of the Food Act and the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and food regulations and includes compositional, labelling and advertising compliance, inspections, audits and investigations. He is responsible for enforcing and supervising food recalls in NSW in co-operation with FSANZ. Peter Day is the NSW representative on the national food regulation Implementation Sub Committee (ISC) and has a key role in development of nationally-consistent food regulatory enforcement policies.
Joe Lederman - FOODLEGAL - Managing Principal
Joe Lederman and his FoodLegal team act for many leading food brands in Australia and Internationally in matters of compliance and risk management for food products, and food marketing, food recalls and regulatory disputes. He is the contributing editor of the Food Law chapter in Halsbury’s Laws of Australia (published by LexisNexis) and is the contributing editor for the popular FoodLegal Bulletin.
Jonathon Kite - Food Standards Australia and New Zealand
Mr Jonathon Kite is a Senior Food Scientist and Risk Manager of FSANZ. His areas include the regulation of novel foods and nutritive substances. His work has created new methodologies for FSANZ in dealing with innovative technologies and novel foods and ingredients.
Caroline Inkster - New Zealand Food Policy Expert
Ms Carole Inkster is a regulatory expert who has represented both Australia and New Zealand nationally and internationally based on her role as Director of Policy, Legal and Strategy in the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) until its 2011 merger with the Ministry for Primary Industries. Carole Inkster was the architect and had oversight of the development of the New Zealand Supplemented Food Standard which involved the process for defining the food and medicine interface. She represented the New Zealand Government in development of the Food Standards Code and more recently has been consulting through the New Zealand Food and Grocery Council.
Dr Lynne Cobiac - CSIRO - Preventative Health Research Flagship - Director
Dr Lynne Cobiac is Director of the CSIRO Preventative Health National Research Flagship. She is one of Australia’s leading nutritional biochemists with over 25 years in scientific research in the areas of basic nutritional science, nutrigenomics, n-3 fatty acids, preventive health, public health, clinical nutrition and dietetics, and consumer science, as well as undertaking volunteer work in undernourished communities in Indonesia. Dr Lynne Cobiac played a key role in the establishment and initial management of the Preventative Health National Research Flagship from 2002-2006 and has recently been appointed as its new Director based at Flinders University School of Medicine. From 2007-2011 Lynne was the Foundation Chair of Nutrition and Dietetics, and in 2008 was appointed as Associate Dean of Flinders Clinical and Molecular Medicine, a multidisciplinary cluster of over 120 academics and clinicians.
